The COVID pandemic has undeniably rocked the world. With Stay At Home orders and closures of non-essential businesses we found ourselves sitting at home on the weekends and after hours feeling more than a little helpless. So we did something about it. . . Once we explored some more we realized there’s an overwhelming amount of virtual volunteer opportunities available to anyone who wants to help make a difference in their community. . . We have been working with the Miami Climate Alliance as COVID-19 Resource and Data Stewards. This amazing organization has set up the Florida Corona Action site where individuals can go to find more information on COVID-19 testing sites, locations that are offering free meals and information hotlines for those with questions about the Coronavirus. Data Stewards search for and verify information to publish for the public to reference on the action site. . . We also joined with Hands On Miami and Operation Gratitude to send handmade cards expressing thanks and offering encouragement to those on the frontlines of the COVID pandemic. While we can’t sew masks or contribute other much needed PPE to frontline workers, we are hopeful that this gesture will make a difference to a nurse, doctor, EMT, police officer or other first responder. We’ve sent dozens of cards and plan to send more each week. . . We also signed up for Adopt a Grandparent, a program that allows individuals in nursing homes to (virtually) enjoy the company of others, see a friendly face and have someone to talk to in a time when in-person visitation is strictly prohibited and many are feeling more scared and alone than ever. . . Our focus is to make a difference in the lives of our clients and those in our community. In order to win a slip/trip and fall case, the injured person must prove that the business establishment had actual or constructive knowledge of the dangerous condition and should have taken action to remedy it. Constructive knowledge can be proved by circumstantial evidence showing that the dangerous condition existed for such a length of time, that in the exercise of ordinary care, the business establishment should have known of the condition. Things we learned yesterday: . . 1) We are not good at bingo; 2) We know way more words to the Guantanamera than we thought; and 3) It takes very little to make someone’s day. . . Yesterday we volunteered our time at The Floridean Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Little Havana. We played bingo, sang songs and read poetry. We spent hours talking to the residents, hearing their stories and their struggle with recovery from their injuries/illnesses. The overarching theme was hope and optimism. . . The point? Just a few hours of our time brightened their day. A few moments of listening and attention made them feel heard. Many didn’t have family around and hadn’t had a visitor in weeks. If road trippin’ is part of your plans keep these safety tips in mind: . 🚗 Be well rested and alert, use your seat belts, observe speed limits and follow the rules of the road. Clean your headlights and turn them on as dusk approaches or in inclement weather. . 🚗 Don’t drink and drive. Have a designated driver available. . 🚗 Give your full attention to the road. Avoid distractions such as cell phones. . 🚗 Use caution in work zones. There are lots of construction projects underway on the highways. . 🚗 Don’t follow other vehicles too closely! . HEAT SAFETY . ☀️ Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. . ☀️ Avoid extreme temperature changes. . ☀️ Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays. . ☀️ Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. . BEACH SAFETY . 🌴 If you plan to swim in the ocean, a lake or river, be aware that swimming in these environments is different than swimming in a pool. Be sure you have the skills for these environments. . 🌴 Swim only at a beach with a lifeguard, within the designated swimming area. Obey all instructions and orders from lifeguards and ask them about local conditions. . 🌴 Make sure you swim sober and that you always swim with a buddy. Know your limitations and make sure you have enough energy to swim back to shore. . 🌴 Protect your neck – don’t dive headfirst. Walk carefully into open waters. . Watch out for and avoid aquatic life. Water plants and animals may be dangerous. . If you are caught in a rip current, try not to panic. Signal to those on shore that you need assistance. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Once you are free, swim toward shore. Going in circles trying to prove your point? Try changing your approach. . . Arguments almost always end up with two people talking at each other instead of listening to and considering the argument the other is making. An ineffective communicator will go in circles and beat their argument to death. A better strategy is to ask questions about the point the other is trying to make. Asking the right questions may make them realize that your point is valid or, at the very least, that theirs may not be as strong as they think. OK maybe not “New You”, but “Better You”. . Here are a few tips to help keep you focused and productive. . . Mute it, flip it over or put it away - Smartphones beeping and buzzing with alerts and notifications interrupt flow and can decrease productivity. Smartphones also prompt users to check them frequently, further impacting our ability to engage in consistently productive work. A lot of times our work is tied in to our cell phones through messages, emails and phone calls. Schedule a five minute slot every hour dedicated to checking your phone. Set special tones for clients, family members or others whose calls or messages are critical and mute all others (turn off the vibrate too!) If you keep your phone on your desk just flipping it over so you don’t see notifications as they flash on your screen can dramatically increase your productivity. . . Take regular breaks - It sounds counterintuitive, but taking scheduled breaks can actually help improve concentration and help you refocus. . . Be proactive, not reactive - Allowing incoming calls and messages to dictate how you spend your day will mean you do a great job of putting out fires but that may be all you get accomplished. Set aside time for responding to emails, but don't let them determine what your day is going to look like. Plan your day before you get started and then do your best to stick to it. . . Some more helpful tips: - Take regular breaks - Set self-imposed deadlines - Make a to-do list - Take advantage of any off-time you have to get ahead (i.e., planning your to-do list during your morning commute) . . Flow is often difficult to attain, this is especially true with today’s technology that is designed to give you minute-by-minute updates. Unfortunately, your cell phone doesn’t discriminate- whether it’s a news flash, an e-mail alert or your cousin’s facebook post about her dog’s new haircut.
